Benoît Johnen became a fierce beer lover when he first worked at the Piton brewery, in Aubel. He brewed there for several years, and when he left in 1996, he knew that one day he would brew again. In 1997, he took over the cafe in his village and made it a warm and friendly place.
Slowly but surely, the small company progressed until producing in 2001, 750Hl of beer. In 2008, being too cramped next to the cafe, they had to move. Some other ideas were added to this project: an association with new collaborators who will take over the coffee and thus take the brewery to a more suitable place.
For the new location, the choice fell on a family farm. The old building of the GjCars garage has been converted into a storage and fermentation room; the old barn was demolished to be rebuilt into a spacious and pleasant brewery, meeting the standards imposed by Afsca. In addition, on the second floor of the brewery, a small banquet hall has been set up.
Over the years, production has increased. There were many new beers on order, but also new Grain d’Orge products that came to complete the range. In 2017 the production reached 4000Hl and a new season type beer, Aubel Pure, has joined the range.
